Daniel Rotem’s album Wave Nature is out today

Daniel Rotem’s new album Wave Nature is out today!

Saxophonist and composer, Daniel Rotem, designed his approach to Wave Nature like the sun diagrams he grew up studying. Almost rhizomatic in nature, one idea spurring another and each subsequent link existing in service to the root and a world of its own, the structure of Wave Nature is both tethered and free-floating.

“I view music as these different lines, and from listening you can come up with universes of thoughts, all these connections and associations. From one idea stem all these different things.”

Wave Nature is, at its core, an album of ideas sewn together, each note signaling and gesturing to something grander. “Seeing something grow in front of you is breathtaking,” Rotem explains. “There is nothing like a small sound and seeing–hearing–it become part of something bigger.”

From Daniel via @danielrotm:

When Pete Min @lucysmeatmarket texted me about getting together to work on a record for @colorfieldrecords I was stoked. “Have an interest in coming in to mess around?” he asked, and mess around we did. It was an absolute joy getting to spend days together in the studio, approaching creating and capturing music in a way that is different from what I’ve been used to with making my own records.

deep love and gratitude to @wilsonthecurator, @buttersscup, @erinbentlage, @jonathanpinson, and @christianeuman for bestowing their brilliance and magic on a few of the songs on this album. While I discovered newfound fulfillment in creating and layering music on my own, there is still no substitute for me for the human connection and communication in music, and I am so thankful we were able to include some of that on this album, and with these heavy geniuses no less. in the face of rising “improvements” w AI, I remain an advocate of real humans making real music, together.

heartfelt thank you and love to @brianbixbyphoto for his sharp eye and big heart, and the beautifully captured moments; to @mileswintner for the design and layout; to @gbrlbrnbm for thinking and working hard to get this music to folks’ ears and hearts; to @cfwein for more pretty photos and for the Wave Nature video.

a few close friends whose wisdom, care, and perspective was invaluable at different moments in the process of manifesting this new release, Anna, @joshuaajohn, @miguelatwoodferguson, @ambernavran, @alexboneham, @chiefseeff, @ronbenbassat. love you, thank you.

lastly, to master Wayne Shorter, who transitioned on recently, but whose inspiration and impact on me is present in every song on this album. “Woods” is basically an attempt at paying tribute to your untouchable, godly-humane artistry.
