Max Jaffe - You Want That Too! (CF023) Vinyl LP
$32.00

Eclectic, tuneful, and exuberant, Max Jaffe’s 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙏𝙤𝙤! is the product of an open and exploratory environment as much as it is the result of Jaffe’s direction. Recorded with Pete Min at his Lucy’s Meat Market studio in Los Angeles, the ten tracks that comprise 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙏𝙤𝙤! feature a variety of top tier collaborators. In fact, Jaffe says, “the collaborators tell a story.”

Some players are folks that Jaffe has been passing like ships in the night for years, only to finally connect at Min’s studio. Others are new connections, new friends, new nodes in an ever-expanding network of the great cosmic conversation that is music.

Counted among these are: Jeff Parker, Meg Duffy, Gavin Gamboa, Daniel Rotem, Shelley Burgon, Spencer Zahn, and Logan Kane.

Nicole McCabe - A Song To Sing (CF019) Vinyl LP
$32.00

The new solo album A Song to Sing from saxophonist Nicole McCabe is only so much a saxophone album. In search of fresh melodic pathways, McCabe built most of this warped electronic jazz around on-the-spot explorations on synthesizer, piano, percussion, and clarinet.
Her improvisations in producer Pete Min’s Los Angeles studio, Lucy’s Meat Market, became raw material for processing, looping, and layering grooves, often before McCabe ever touched her alto. For the talented young composer, it was an experiment in process, an “extension of myself
into a different world.
”A rising force in the Los Angeles scene, McCabe’s world is ever-growing. This, her full-length debut on Colorfield Records, follows What is My Porpoise?, the latest frenzy from Dolphin Hyperspace, her beat-based duo with bassist Logan Kane, and the Jeff Parker-produced Mosaic, her fourth album as a bandleader. She entered Colorfield’s orbit with a spot on Amy
Aileen Wood’s The Heartening and recently featured on Spencer Zahn’s Statues Live. Recent collaborators include Dave Harrington, David Binney, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Louis Cole, Justin Brown, and Paul Cornish, the latter two guesting here...  more

Amy Aileen Wood - The Heartening (CF015) Vinyl LP
$32.00

Amy Aileen Wood is unaccustomed to the spotlight, which is very much by design. A calming presence in any room and a force behind the drum kit, Wood meshes her astute listening skills with an undeniable ownership of the music at hand, as illustrated in her work on Fiona Apple’s 2020 record Fetch The Bolt Cutters, which Wood co-produced.
When initially approached by Pete Min of Colorfield Records about collaborating on an album of her own, Amy was met with a mix of intrigue and abject terror.
“My motivation was entirely fear based,” Wood explains, “I think my first question for Pete was, ‘are you sure?’
But it’s always good to get out of your comfort zone. And ultimately it was equal parts uncomfortable and rewarding.”
By harnessing those feelings of discomfort, Amy manages to create a lush soundscape rife with tension, release, curiosity and playful exploration on her debut release, The Heartening.
Armed with little more than a cymbal bag, a bottle of wine, and a willingness to explore, Amy and Pete hunkered down in Min’s Los Angeles studio, Lucy’s Meat Market, for a series of experimental sessions in the spring and summer of 2023. The goal of those sessions? In Amy’s
words, “to come in and be as unencumbered as possible.”
The resulting album features cameo appearances from Bolt Cutter brethren Fiona Apple, Sebastian Steinberg, and John Would, with guest work from Daphne Chen, Nicole McCabe, Wayne Whittaker, and Kelsey Wood.
Drawing from such eclectic influences as 90s hip-hop and punk rock to artists like Floating Points and Brian Eno, The Heartening is a record steeped in subtle textures, unpredictable twists and ear-turning instrumentation, a paradoxical listening experience that is at once both calming and chaotic.

Anna Butterss - Activities (CF005) Vinyl LP
$32.00

Released July 8th 2022.

Anna Butterss’ Activities was born out of a chance studio invitation, a one day session that slowly evolved into the encompassing, electro-acoustic opus they eventually crafted. Alongside co-producer and mixer, Pete Min of the label Colorfield Records, the bassist turned-songwriter recruited collaborators Josh Johnson, Ben Lumsdaine, and Christian Euman to flesh out their compositions. These songs, created through a process of improvisation, processing and layering are deeply personal to Butterss, a collection of reflections on life in a foreign country, grief, and family.

Holly Palmer - Metamorphosis (CF022) Vinyl LP
from $32.00

Both unflinchingly experimental and undeniably listenable, Metamorphosis is a mid-career reinvention from masterful vocalist Holly Palmer. Conceived with producer / multi-instrumentalist Pete Min, and developed in the studio through improvisation and experimentation, the result is jazz-inflected art-pop, as warm, playful and inviting as it is uncategorizable, a record brimming with radiant supporting performances from heavyweights like Cuong Vu, Jeff Parker, Benny Bock, Jay Bellerose, and Blackstar rhythm section Mark Guiliana and Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie.)

OHMA - Between All Things (CF006) Vinyl LP
$32.00

Between All Things is a world in which a sonic forest blooms simultaneously in all directions. OHMA's, Mia Garcia and Hailey Niswanger thoughtfully crafted the body of sound during 2021 to invoke a deep listening. The record begins with a meditative state, eliciting the openness of a journey unfolding. A gentle saxophone acts as the guide to enter the sphere, inviting the listener to become one with the sounds. With each moment new sonic doors are opened, evoking a multitude of emotions. Ranging from earthy bass tones and flowing flutes to analog synthesizers and vintage drum machines, the record provides a full range of the sonic spectrum. Each song on the album is entirely unique to itself but holds an essence of familiarity and timelessness, all of which contributes to the connection between all things. Integrating life’s rhythm, the pair recorded lakes, fire, leaves, and birds to collaborate with the orchestra of nature. Their process is experimental, always guided by play.

Abe Rounds - The Confidence to Make Mistakes (CF001) Vinyl LP
$32.00

CREATIVE EXPLORATION AND TRUST IN SELF is the point of departure for Abraham Rounds’ current project, “The Confidence to Make Mistakes”, a snapshot of a performance based in improvisation. With a goal to find unselfconscious freedom, Abe’s first solo EP represents a moment of unapologetic self-expression through percussion, drums and vocals. Asked what compels his courage in creativity, Abe credits his family. He was raised by strong, supportive women and his father is renowned Sydney musician/producer Victor Rounds. It is also impossible not to look back at his ancestry, with elders from many corners of the globe, including Fiji, Tonga, Hungary, and Iraq. The courage to go where his own heart led is what prompted Abe to hit record and capture 22 minutes of musical truth.

Brad Allen Williams - œconomy (CF009) Vinyl LP
$32.00

Like all Colorfield releases, ŒCONOMY was born from an improvisatory spirit that reflects the label’s mission. Showing up with no compositions was a new workflow for Williams, who nevertheless enjoyed escaping the tendency to over-refine. “It was very satisfying to watch tossed-off creative impulses develop over time,” he explains–though he did get to indulge his compositional mind with a series of lush string arrangements. Expert performances by The Section Quartet and a few virtuosic cameos by drummer Mark Guiliana represent the only instruments not played by Williams himself.
